A Turcite sheet roll is a PTFE-based polymer composite material used as a low-friction, high-wear-resistance bearing surface on machine tools and other linear motion applications. It's a self-lubricating material, often reinforced with fillers like bronze, that is skived from billets into thin, flexible rolls for easy application to machinery to improve performance and extend component life. Key features include low friction without stick-slip, high wear resistance, chemical resistance, and good dimensional stability.
Material Composition & Manufacturing
Base Material:
Turcite is a brand name for a polymer composite, primarily composed of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE or Teflon).
Reinforcement:
Various fillers, such as bronze, are added to the PTFE resins to enhance its properties.
Manufacturing Process:
Unlike conventional plastics, Turcite cannot be extruded. Instead, the formulated PTFE billets are processed by a "skiving" method to create thin, skived sheets that are then rolled.
Key Properties
Low Friction:
The high PTFE content provides extremely low friction, crucial for smooth, stick-slip-free linear motion, especially at low speeds.
Wear Resistance:
Turcite exhibits excellent wear resistance, significantly increasing the service life of machine components.
Chemical Resistance:
It is resistant to a wide range of cutting fluids, oils, and other chemicals found in industrial environments.
Dimensional Stability:
Turcite sheets maintain their shape and size under varying conditions, ensuring precision in machine tool applications.
Damping Properties:
The material's damping characteristics help reduce machine tool vibration, improving accuracy.
Applications
Machine Tools:
Turcite is a traditional and highly effective bearing material for machine tool ways and gibs on planers, milling machines, grinders, and CNC machines.
Linear Motion:
It's ideal for any application involving linear movement where reduced friction and wear are critical design considerations.
Transfer Lines:
Used in transfer lines and other automated material handling systems to ensure smooth movement.
Application & Integration
Epoxy Application:
Turcite slideway strips are applied using a two-part epoxy resin after the bare metal surface is thoroughly cleaned and degreased.
Surface Preparation:
One or both sides of the sheet can be etched to improve adhesion for the bonding process, depending on the specific application.
