Aluminum 6061 is a versatile, medium-to-high-strength, heat-treatable aluminum alloy that is widely used for general-purpose structural and engineering applications. Its main alloying elements are magnesium and silicon. The most popular grade is 6061-T6, which offers high strength and durability.

Key properties

Corrosion resistance: It exhibits very good resistance to general corrosion, including atmospheric and marine environments. This is enhanced by anodizing, a process that creates a transparent, protective oxide layer.

Machinability: It has good machinability in harder tempers like T4 and T6, allowing it to be cut, drilled, and milled into intricate shapes.

Weldability: Aluminum 6061 can be easily joined using welding methods like TIG and MIG. While welding can slightly reduce the strength in the weld zone, strength can be restored with subsequent heat treatment.

Workability: The alloy has good formability in the annealed (soft) condition, allowing for deep drawing and complex shaping.

Heat treatability: Its strength can be significantly increased through heat treatment and artificial aging, a process known as T6 tempering.

Common tempers

The mechanical properties of Aluminum 6061 are heavily dependent on its temper, or heat treatment.

6061-O

: In this annealed, soft condition, the material has maximum formability.

6061-T4

: This temper is naturally aged and offers good cold formability.

6061-T6

: This is the most common temper, produced by solution heat-treating and artificially aging the material for maximum strength and hardness.

6061-T651

: This temper has similar mechanical properties to T6 and involves solutionizing, stress-relieving stretching, and artificial aging.

M2 is a molybdenum-based tungsten high-speed tool steel (AISI/SAE classification) offering an excellent balance of high hardness (up to 65 HRC), wear resistance, toughness, and red hardness. It is the most common high-speed steel, widely used for cutting tools (drills, taps, mills) and cold-work dies due to its superior performance over T1 steel. Key Characteristics & Properties Composition: Contains carbon (\(0.85-0.90\%\)), tungsten (\(5.50-6.75\%\)), molybdenum (\(4.50-5.50\%\)), chromium (\(3.75-4.50\%\)), and vanadium (\(1.75-2.20\%\)).Red Hardness: Maintains cutting edge hardness at high operating temperatures.Toughness & Wear Resistance: Provides high resistance to abrasion, while being tough enough to prevent chipping.Versatility: Replaces tungsten-type T1 steel in over \(95\%\) of applications due to better cost-effectiveness and performance.Heat Treatment: Typically tempered at \(565.5^{\circ }\text{C}\) (\(1050^{\circ }\text{F}\)) to achieve desired hardness. Common Applications Cutting Tools: Twist drills, milling cutters, reamers, broaches, taps, and thread chasers.Cold Work Tools: Punches, dies, shear blades, and cold extrusion tools.Woodworking Tools: High-performance saws and cutters. Alternatives & Equivalents DIN/EN: \(1.3343\)JIS: SKH51Alternatives: M35 (adds cobalt for higher hot hardness), M42, D2.
